How to Install and Set Up a Dial-up Connection

Dial-up connections require a modem to be connected to your PC. There are internal and external modem types. The modem will serve as your dialer to connect to your ISP (internet service provider).

Equipment Required

  1. Dial-up Modem. There are 2 types of dial-up modem, an external and an internal modem.
  2. Modem's AC power supply (if an external modem)
  3. Modem cable – C4
  4. Phone line splitter
  5. Phillips screwdriver (when connecting an internal modem)

Installation Instructions

An external modem is a device that connects to your PC by serial or USB (Universal Serial Bus) cable. Internal and external modems have the same function, external modems just sit outside your PC and don't require you to open your PC cover to install it. Here are the steps to installing an external modem:

  1. Upon starting the computer there will be a balloon that pop-ups on the lower right corner of your PC that may say "Found New Hardware". Click it and you will see a box that says, "Found New Hardware Wizard". It will configure the PC to work with your newly installed modem.
  2. Insert the installation CD
  3. 3. If the box doesn't pop out, Go to START>CONTROL PANEL> click ADD HARDWARE icon (you have to switch to classic view in XP to view the icon). Add Hardware Wizard box will pop-up. It will walk you through your modem installation.

Modem Setup

Using Windows 98

  1. On your desktop, click My Computer.
  2. Click Dial-Up Networking icon
  3. It will ask you to type a name for the computer you are dialing. Type the name of your ISP. Then click next.
  4. Here, type in the number to dial for your connection which will depend on your connection package that you choose. All info that will go here will be provided by your ISP.
  5. Then click Finish.

Using Windows XP

  2. Click on Network and Internet Connections.
  3. Click Network Connections
  4. Click Create new connection
  5. The "New Connection Wizard" box will pop up. Click 'next'.
  6. It will ask for the Connection Type. Choose "Connect to the Internet". Hit Next.
  7. It will ask you how you wanted to get connected. Choose to setup your connection manually.
  8. Then choose to "connect using a dial-up modem". Click Next
  9. Provide your ISP Name. Click Next.
  10. Provide the phone number to dial (info will be provided by your ISP). Click Next.
  11. Fill in with your Username and password. (info will be provided by your ISP). Click Next.
  12. Click Finish.

For Vista Users

  1. Click on the Start Button and then click on the Network option.
  2. Select "Network and Sharing Center " from the top of the screen.
  3. Next, Select "Set up a Connection or Network"
